Research Interests
Michael Janoschka is a Professor of Regional Science and the Head of the Institute for Regional Science at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). His recent research focuses on (i) a critical analysis of the transformation of housing markets, in particular under the conceptual umbrella of financialization and sustainability; (ii) social and economic processes in cities that lead to the displacement of vulnerable households; (iii) conflicts over the use and appropriation of (urban) spaces; (iv) new practices of urban and regional governance, generated particularly by local citizen initiatives; (v) innovative participatory, visual and audio-visual methods for urban and regional research. For more than 20 years, Michael Janoschka has been researching mainly in Southern Europe and Latin America, and more recently also in German cities (especially Leipzig). Michael Janoschka graduated from Humboldt University in Berlin and received his doctorate from Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. Other teaching and research stations in his career include Weimar, Leipzig, Madrid, Buenos Aires, Quito, Athens and Leeds.

MERID, Buntsandstein Reservoir Quality in the Upper Rhine Graben
Reservoir- and rock quality analyses and modeling, assessment of storage and production potential of subsurface energy systems
Dr. Benjamin Busch is a research assistant at the department of Structural Geology and Tectonics, with a focus on reservoir quality analyses in siliciclastic energy reservoirs. He obtained his BSc and MSc degree at RWTH Aachen University and his PhD at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. He has worked on collaborative research projects with industry and academia covering topics of resource storage and production in Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, and the US. His current topic is the implementation of reservoir quality parameters in digital rock simulations with CFD-simulations together with IAM-CMS at KIT.

Remote Sensing, Vegetation, Forests, Disturbances
Dr. Fabian Fassnacht is currently a PostDoc at the Institute of Geography and Geoecology of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. He has graduated at the University of Freiburg with a Diploma in Forestry Sciences. In his PhD thesis he specialized in the application of remote sensing data for the retrieval of vegetation properties with a focus on forest ecosystems. Since 2012 he has a continuous collaboration with the Universidad de Chile within projects focusing on questions related to remote sensing-assisted forest inventory, invasive species assessment and the mapping on vegetation.

Dr. Simon Glöser-Chahoud works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Industrial Production (IIP) within KIT. Before joining IIP, where he currently holds a position as the head of research group “Sustainable Value Chains”, he has worked as a project manager and research associate for Fraunhofer ISI. He holds a diploma degree in industrial engineering from TU Berlin and he has passed his external PhD studies at TU Munich and TU Clausthal during his research activities at Fraunhofer. His current research focuses on the simulation of material and product cycles as well as raw material markets, the optimization of closed-loop supply chains and the techno-economic evaluation of industrial processes at an early development stage with an emphasis on the use of bio-based renewable resources.

Geothermal exploration, numerical reservoir engineering
Dr. Sebastian Held is a post-doctoral researcher working in the Institute of Applied Geosciences, Division of Geothermal research. He graduated from KIT in Applied Geosciences concentrating on numerical reservoir modelling during his Master Thesis. He obtained his PhD in 2017 for studies on the multidisciplinary exploration of the Villarrica geothermal system, southern Chile, where he was focusing on geophysical and geochemical techniques. Since 2012 he is managing the collaboration between the Andean Geothermal Center of Excellence (CEGA) and KIT, which he has also initiated. After his dissertation, he continues with geothermal reservoir exploration, but also returning to research on the numerical description of geothermal processes.

Prof. Dr. Christoph Hilgers is full professor for Structural Geology and Tectonics and director of the Institute of Applied Geosciences at KIT since 2016. His interests are energy systems, raw-material efficiency, reservoir quality prediction, digital rocks, contact-free imaging and mineral detection, value chains as well as process- and strategy analyses.
After his studies of Geology at RWTH Aachen University and Applied Structural Geology & Rock Mechanics at Imperial College London, he worked as researcher at RWTH Aachen before moving to Quality Management & Metrology, Mechanical Engineering at WZL. He set up and managed GUtech in Muscat, Oman, and later became a professor of Reservoir-Petrology at RWTH Aachen University before moving to KIT.
He is a member of several professional and interdisciplinary boards such as the State’s ThinkTank Innovative Resources Strategies and the German association of academics and professionals in the petroleum industry DGMK.

Geothermics, geochemical exploration, rock-water interaction, scaling formation
Dr. Fabian Nitschke is working as a post-doc researcher at the Institute of Applied Geosciences in the Division of Geothermics. His primary research interest is the geochemistry of geothermal systems. He applies a wide range of methods comprising laboratory experiments and numerical simulation as well as mineralogical and hydrochemical analytics. During his Masterthesis (2012) he investigated the formation mechanisms of mineral precipitations (scaling) during geothermal production. He obtained his PhD in 2017. A major part of the dissertation focuses on geochemical exploration at the Villarrica geothermal system in Southern Chile. Of particular relevance is the development of precise geothermometric methods to determine reservoir temperatures from the chemical composition of spring fluids.

Maximiliano Pavez is doctoral candidate at AGW-INE. He graduated from Pontificia Universidad de Chile in Physics with a major in geophysics at Universidad de Chile. As a PhD student at the KIT, he works in joint inversion of magnetotelluric and gravity data in the geothermal systems at Villarrica volcano, southern Chile. He is interested in consolidating research and academic Chilean-Germany networks, motivated by his experience in the DAAD-CONICYT scholarship.

Energy system modelling, electric vehicles and stationary battery storage for RES integration
Sabrina Ried works as a scientist at the KIT Chair of Energy Economics at . After graduating from KIT as Industrial Engineer, she worked in the photovoltaic industry. Her research focuses on battery storage for supporting the integration of wind farms and photovoltaic systems into energy systems and electricity markets. In current research projects, she analyses opportunities of using battery flexibility for sustainably operating electric vehicles. Sabrina got the chance to get to know Chile during her studies abroad at Pontificia Universidad Católica in Santiago de Chile (UC) and a research visit to the UC and the Universidad de Chile in 2017.

Prof. Dr. Eva Schill leads the GeoEnergy group at the Institute of Nuclear Waste Disposal of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany, and is professor for geophysics in reservoir systems at the Technical University of Darmstadt. Holding a degree in geology, she received her doctoral degree in geophysics in 2000 from the University of Tübingen. She was appointed junior professor in geothermics at the University of Mainz in 2007 and ordinary professor in 2009 in Neuchâtel (CH). Since 2014, she leads the geothermal exploration and monitoring research at KIT and is responsible for the development of the geothermal infrastructures DeepStor and GeoLaB at KIT. Professor Schill has participated in different joint projects with the Universidad de Chile an currently supervises two Chilean doctoral students.

Prof. Dr. Frank Schultmann is Chair Professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany, and Director of the KIT’s Institute for Industrial Production (IIP) and the KIT’s French-German Institute for Environmental Research (DFIU). Professor Schultmann studied Business and Industrial Engineering at the University of Karlsruhe. He completed his doctoral thesis in 1998 at the Faculty of Economics and Management and his Habilitation in 2003 receiving the venia legendi (teaching authority) in Management Science. Prior to his present positions, he was Professor of Industrial Management at the University of Koblenz-Landau and holder of the Chair of Business Administration, Construction Management and Economics at the University of Siegen. Professor Schultmann has been working closely with Chilean partners for more than ten years, particularly with the Universidad de Concepción and the Universidad Austral de Chile. In this context, he has successfully led several German-Chilean projects focusing on biorefineries and the bioeconomy in Chile.

Dr. Kira Schumacher is managing director of the French-German Institute for Environmental Research (DFIU) of the KIT. She holds a Ph.D. in economics granted by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Her doctoral thesis investigates public acceptance of renewable energies in several countries, including Chile, through an empirical lens. She has coordinated several international projects in the area of bioenergy and sustainable mobility with research partners from Germany, France, Switzerland, and Chile. From September to December 2017 she was a visiting researcher at Universidad de Concepción (UdeC) and Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh).

Philipp Staudt is the head of the research group “Smart Grids and Energy Markets” at the chair of Information & Market Engineering of Prof. Dr. Christof Weinhardt. He graduated from KIT with a Master in Mathematics & Economics after his Bachelor in Industrial Engineering also at KIT. During his studies he focused on applications of statistical learning as well as electricity market design. In his research Philipp focuses on the improvement of congestion management especially in the context of the German energy market and other means to facilitate the transition to a more sustainable energy system. During his PhD he spent three months at the Universidad Católica in Santiago.

Prof. Renzo Vallebuona studied architecture in Darmstadt. In parallel to his studies and later as a graduate, he ran his own office in Udine, Italy, with Renza Pitton. In addition, he was chief designer of the Berlin office Stirling & Wilford Ass. Together with Walter Nägeli he was responsible for the design and execution of the major project "B. Braun Melsungen". Later he co-funded the current VAST-Architekten office in Düsseldorf.
Prof. Vallebuona has been a visiting professor at GSD at Harvard and also Unit Master at the Architectural Association AA in London for several years. He held a professorship at the TU Berlin and a visiting professorship at the ETH, Zurich for two years each. Since 2012 he has been head of the Department of Constructive Design Methodology at KIT where he teaches Methodology of Design.
T he reserach of Prof. Vallebuona mainly focuses on assessment of processes combining advanced High-Tec engineering with low key technologies. Notable projects include an experimental project for a self-sufficient Farmhouse in Spain, which is undergoing its first test phase. At KIT, currently he is working on two projects in cooperation with other Universities: A wooden/ Dibond-Aluminum composite panels laboratory building for natural-sciences in Patagonia, Chile, with EULA Institute for Environmental Research at Universidad de Concepción, and an ongoing project to build a 75m span wooden bridge for pedestrians in Norrköping in cooperation with KTH (Royal Institute of Technology), the Swedish Wood-Industry and the city of Norköping.
Both in his work as an architect in the office and in teaching, his approach integrates various related disciplines from project to project, which lead to a differentiated, interdisciplinary way of working, without style obligation.

Prof. Dr. Christof Weinhardt graduated in Industrial Engineering and received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Karlsruhe (TH) in 1989. Then he focused his research work more on Information System at the Universities of Giessen and Bielefeld. Currently – as full professor - he is director of the Institute for Information Systems and Management (IISM) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) heading the group “Information and Market Engineering” (IM). For more than 10 years he was Vice Dean of Research and from 2012-2014 Dean of the Department of Economics and Management at KIT, and from 2010-2014 member of the Strategy and Research Board of KIT. In 2006 he became member of the Advisory Group of the German Industry Association (BDI) on “Internet of Energy”.

Prof. Dr. Diego Morata is the Director of the Andean Geothermal Center of Excellence (CEGA, http://www.cega-uchile.cl/) at the Department of Geology, Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Universidad de Chile (Chile). He is professor of Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Principles of Geothermics at the Universidad de Chile. In 1993, Diego Morata obtained his doctoral degree in Geology from the Universidad de Granada (Spain). After five years at Universidad de Cádiz (Spain) he moved to Universidad de Chile in 1998, obtaining the qualification of full professor in 2010.
Since 2011 to present, he has led the Andean Geothermal Center of Excellence (CEGA) and from 2015 to present, he has been associate researcher of the Millennium Nucleus for Metal Tracing Along Subduction (NMTM, http://www.trazadoresdemetales.cl/eng/).
His research is mostly focussed on the hot-fluid-rock interaction in active and fossil geothermal systems and recently in the development of pilot project for geothermal direct use for society. Professor Morata has participated in different joint projects with the KIT and other German universities.

Dr. Alfredo Aguilera joined the Forest Products Institute at UACh in 1993. In 1995 he received a fellowship of the French government obtaining his master’s and doctoral degrees in Wood Science from Nancy 1 University (Épinal, France) in 1996 and 2000, respectively. Dr. Aguilera has focused his research in the field of wood machining, evaluating the tool wear phenomena on solid wood, in moldings and wood panels. Additional subjects of research are surface roughness (Zeiss: Laser Scanning Microscope) and wettability (Krüss: Drop Shape Analysis) of machined surfaces, as well as cutting forces (Kistler: Dynamometer) when the whole kinematics, tool material (steel) and cutting geometry are complex variables that affects the tool life or tool wear and consequently the final quality of appearance grade products.
Dr. Aguilera is active member of Groupe Usinage Bois (GUB) – France, fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science – Germany, head of the Forest Products Laboratory at UACh-Valdivia, and Dean of the Forest Science and Natural Resources Faculty.

Dr. Rodrigo Arias is an Associate Professor of Beef Production in the Institute of Animal Production at UACh. He undertook his graduate studies (Master and PhD) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the United States in ruminant nutrition, under the supervision of Dr. Terry L. Mader. His research has been focused on two main areas: beef cattle nutrition and modeling the environmental effects on cattle performance and vice versa. In 2010, he earned the Norman Borlaug Fellowship & Global Research Alliance to receive training in modeling and measurement of enteric methane emissions of cattle at University of California-Davis and USDA research center in Twin Falls-Idaho, under the supervision of Dr. Ermias Kebreab and Dr. April Leytem. At present he is the Director of the Graduate School of the Faculty of Agricultural Science

Andrea Pino Piderit is the Director the Transdisciplinary Center of Environmental and Development Human Studies (CEAM) at the Austral University of Chie. She is interested in nature conservation and restoration. She investigates the relationships between nature and human beings, specifically in forest and wetland ecosystems, at local and landscape scales. She has studied environmental history and land use change, landscape ecology and livelihood agriculture in Temperate Rainforests of the Southern Andes biosphere reserve in Chile, to the purpose of influencing public policies for biodiversity conservation and human wellbeing.

Dr. Lorenzo Reyes is Assistant Professor of the Institute of Electricity and Electronics at UACh. He received the B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Chile in 2009. He then worked on the design and deployment of the first renewable-based microgrid in Latin America, the ESUSCON project. He then moved to Switzerland and got the Ph.D. in Energy degree at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, in 2016. After finishing his PhD, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Distributed Electrical System Laboratory (DESL), EPFL. From January 2019 he has been with UACh. His main areas of interest consider the broad penetration of renewable resources and electromobility into electrical grids.

Dr. Galo Valdebenito is Civil Engineer and obtained his PhD in 2009 at Technical University of Catalonia, Barcelona. Dr. Valdebenito is Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering UACh. His main research áreas are: Applied Geophysics, Seismic Engineering, Patrimonial Structures.
Between 2013 to 2015, Dr. Valdebenito was the vice-dean of the College of Engineering at UACh. Currently, he is the Director of the Research Center of Natural and Anthropogenic Hazards (RiNA) at Universidad Austral de Chile. Since 2002, Dr. Valdebenito is the Director of Arko Consultancy Ltd., dedicated to structural engineering, seismic vulnerability, seismic engineering, seismic instrumentation and non invasive geophysical studies. Dr. Valdebenito is also member of several international associations and collaborates as external advisor for the Chilean Government in seismic engineering.

Natural Antioxidants for human consumption, natural extracts as pest control, connectiion and synergies between industry and universities.
Mg. Joel David Velásquez Velásquez is Professor at the Chemical Sciences Institute at UACh. With more that 20 years of experience working in the industrial sector, he is now acting as a liaison between the University and different industries. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry and a Master’s degree in education, and extensive industrial experience in fields related to natural antioxidants, chemistry, and food. Between the years of 2015 and 2017, he was a research collaborator in projects involving acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, and between 2018 and 2019 he has been involved in research projects related to natural antioxidants and to the use of plant extracts as possible pest control.
Mr. Velásquez is in charge of the Innovation pillar of the Coordination Team of IEDE at UACh.

Alex Berg occupies the position of Executive Director of the “Unidad de Desarrollo Tecnológico” (UDT) in the University of Concepción, an R&D institute whose main goal is to strengthen the joint work between Industry and University through the development of new products and technologies and their transference to industry.
He realized postgraduate studies at the University of Hamburg, Germany, obtaining the grade of Dr. in Natural Sciences (Dr. rer. nat.) and participated in the developed a several technologies related to new processes and biobased products, some of them have reached industrial level.

Dr Alejandra Stehr, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Concepcion, Chile. Dr. Stehr received his Degree in Civil Engineering in 1998 from the Universidad de Concepción and is Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from the same University in 2008. Her areas of specialization are hydrological and environmental modelling and the evaluation of the effects on water availability of Climate and land use Changes., she is involved as 1 of 9 Scientist in the scientific committee that was established by the minister of Science and Technology in the frame of the COP25. She has published articles in peer-reviewed international journals and several book chapters. Dra. Alejandra Stehr has participated in many research projects in Chile and abroad, especially with Europe, aimed to improve watershed management in Chile. She had received support from the Chilean National Science Foundation since 2011 onwards in projects related to water availability and global changes.
